What are My Options for Lip Enhancement?
There are three main choices when it comes to enhancing your lips. The first is through dermal filler injections. These hyaluronic acid fillers are a very popular non-surgical option and one of the most affordable options. The second option is fat injections. Using fat from other areas of the body using liposuction you can achieve a full kip augmentation that lasts much longer than dermal filler injections. The final option for lip augmentation is via lip implants. This semi-permanent solution for fuller lips using silicon or other biodegradable substance can last for many years.
Dermal Filler Injections for Lip Enhancement
Products such as Juvederm and Restylane are made of hyaluronic acid which is naturally produced in the body already. The procedure is done in only a few minutes in the office and no downtime is needed. Restylane is used for both lip augmentation and to correct the appearance of lines on the lips sometimes caused by aging. It takes a few days to see the full results of Restylane and the results typically last about 10 months. Juvederm is used for the plumping of lips and Juvederm Volbella XC can be used to correc the vertical lines above lips or simply plump the lips. Results from Juvederm injections are instant and last about a year.
Fat Injections for Lip Augmentation
Fat grafting, or autologous fat injections involve using liposuction to remove your own fat from somewhere else on your body and then transfer that fat into the lips to make them fuller. No incisions are needed on the lips or face and the procedure is very safe. Unlike dermal fillers there may be a little bit of downtime needed from the liposuction procedure but it should be minimal. The results of a fat injection for lip augmentation lasts years unlike dermal fillers which only typically last one year at most.
Lip Implants for Lip Augmentation
Lip implants are the most involved procedure when it comes to lip enhancement options. This semi-permanent solution to fuller lips involves taking an implant made of soft silicone rubber or another biodegradable material and inserting them into the lips with small incisions made in the corners of the mouth. Due to the location of the incisions they are not visible when healed. The surgery typically only takes about 30 minutes and most patients only need 1 to 3 days of recovery time after the procedure.
