Lip-Lifts Are the New Trend in Plastic Surgery

In 2018, it's safe to say if there's something you don't like about your appearance, there's a product - or a surgery - that can fix it. Don't like your hair color? Dye it. Don't like your weight? Diet. Don't like the philtral length between your upper lip and the bottom of your nose? Well, there's a fix for that, too, and it's called a lip-lift. Much like it sounds, the lip-lift lifts up the "cupid's bow" of the lips, pulling it closer to the bottom of the nose. This adds more definition to the cupid's bow, and the procedure can even be customized to change the shape or symmetry of this area of the lips.

You may not think such a specific surgery would get a lot of interest, but believe it or not, the lip-lift is gaining quite a bit of steam in plastic surgeons' offices around the country.

"You can get very similar results from getting fillers in your upper lip," says Dr. Ryan Mitchell, a plastic surgeon from Henderson, Nevada. "But you'll need to maintain them with more injections."

And therein lies the reasoning behind the lip-lift. Patients don't want to keep coming back for more fillers, which can be painful and expensive, nor do they want to keep faking it with lip liner.

"They'd rather spend the money up front and never have to think about it again," says Mitchell.

That's not to say the lip-lift isn't painful, because it is - but it's generally well tolerated with over-the-counter pain medicine. The entire procedure takes about an hour, but patients should expect the recovery to take at least a week, with the first few days being the worst. According to Mitchell, after that, the results are permanent and shouldn't require any additional modification - or any additional investment.
