Softer, clearer, younger-looking skin is something we all aspire to have. But unfortunately, sometimes in the pursuit of younger skin, we end up making skincare mistakes that make us look older than we are. Too much sugar: Yes, sugar is delicious and has been scientifically proven to activate the pleasure centers of our brains. But it also has a dark side. In addition to raising the risk of diabetes, heart disease, chronic inflammation, high blood pressure and obesity, it can also wreak havoc on your skin. That’s because sugar causes a process called glycation, which occurs when the sugar in your blood combines with proteins and forms new molecules called advanced glycation end products (AGEs). At around age 35, these AGEs make the collagen and elastin in your skin dry and brittle, causing your skin to wrinkle and sag - and it gets worse over time.
Not wearing an SPF daily: Don’t think that just because you’re not going to the beach or spending the day outdoors you don’t need to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays. You should wear a lotion containing a broad-spectrum SPF of at least 15 on all exposed areas of skin any time you plan on stepping outdoors or sitting by a window - even if it’s just for five minutes or to drive to work.
Be sure to reapply lotion as needed by following the directions on the bottle, and remember the higher the SPF, the longer your skin will be protected. A good rule of thumb for choosing SPF is if your skin burns within 10 minutes of unprotected sun exposure, an SPF of 15 would extend that by 15 times. So, you’d get 150 minutes of sun exposure before you’d begin to burn. For an SPF of 20, you’d get 200 minutes of sun exposure before your skin begins to burn.
Not exfoliating your skin: Gently exfoliating your skin either with a cleaning brush, gentle facial scrub or through a chemical peel or microdermabrasion can help remove the older, duller dead layers of surface skin and help you reveal the younger, brighter skin below. Even if you take good care of your skin, oils, dirt, dead skin and makeup can settle into pores and fine lines, making them appear deeper and duller, and making you look older.
Overdoing the injectables: Fillers and injectables are a great way to plump up the skin and smooth fine lines. Unfortunately, with so many places offering these cosmetic procedures, it has become all too easy to find a low-cost, underqualified practitioner with a heavy hand who leaves you looking overdone. While it always comes down to personal preference, receiving Botox and fillers from a licensed and trained plastic surgeon can be the difference between looking like you had work done and looking like yourself, but better.
Picking at blemishes: You’ve probably heard it a thousand times before: Don’t pop your zits, and stop touching your face. Why? Because when you pop acne, it may feel better, but it can make your acne worse. This is because you can actually push the oils trapped in your pores deeper into your pores, making the acne last longer, and causing infection. This can also cause scarring, which also ages you.
Touching your face is another no-no, because it can cause blemishes where there may not be any to begin with, leaving you vulnerable to acne scars and discoloration.
