Millennials Using Plastic Surgery as Preventative Medicine

A January 2019 study by the American Academy of Facial and Plastic Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) found that more and more millennials are seeking out plastic surgeons like they would any other medical doctor - all in an effort to ward off the signs of aging before they begin.

The study claims the younger generation (between ages 23 and 38) views plastic surgery as a preventative measure, not as a way to turn back the clock like older generations do.

Dr. Ryan Mitchell is a plastic surgeon based in Henderson, Nevada. He has seen this trend himself in his own clinic.

"I see a lot of millennials looking to make little tweaks here and there to prevent the signs of aging, but also to look good on social media," Mitchell says.

He's not the only one - the AAFPRS also noted an increase in patients hoping to look better in the selfies that dominate popular sites like Instagram and Snapchat.

"Social media has become the new mirror, except unlike a mirror we're sharing our view with our friends and the world," Mitchell says. "It puts a lens up to what we like about ourselves, but also what we'd like to change - and what we'd like to keep the same."
