Putting Your Best Face Forward When You Walk Down the Aisle
The average couple is paying nearly $2500 for wedding photos alone. If you’re spending this kind of money on photos of yourself, you want to be sure you’re putting your very best face forward. After all, chances are you won’t be shelling out that kind of money for another photo session anytime soon. Whether it’s you that’s getting married, or if you’ll be part of a wedding party or simply in wedding photos as a guest this summer, here are some tips for looking your very best in photos that are sure to become family heirlooms.
Last year, American brides spent an average of $1564 for a wedding gown and an additional $275 on average for hair and makeup. Add in accessories like jewelry, shoes, and veil, and the median cost for a bride’s total wedding look is well over two-thousand dollars! In fact, according to vaguepenguin.com, the cost of the bride’s look alone rings up at around four percent of the entire average wedding budget. For men walking down the aisle, prices can range anywhere from $300 for a rented tuxedo to over $1500 for a purchased, altered tuxedo. But with all that money being spent to look your best, don’t forget your skin! After all, studies have shown time and time again that no matter how beautiful your outfit or backdrop, when viewing photos, the human eye is naturally drawn to the face. One study even found that using attractive female faces in advertising increased sales by four percent, proving that looking your best in pictures matters.

Botox: According to a recent survey of brides-to-be on the wedding site RealSelf.com, 14.8 percent of brides are interested in getting Botox injections for their wedding this year. Botox is a safe, widely-available injection that blocks the nerve activity in your muscles, eliminating the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in the face. Botox injections can run between $300 and $1000. If you’re interested in getting Botox injections prior to your wedding, we recommend coming in no sooner than a week before your wedding, to allow any swelling to go down and for the Botox to set and achieve its maximum effectiveness. However, because Botox injections will last you anywhere from 3 to 4 months, you could even come in a month or two before your wedding and still have beautiful results on your big day.
Juvederm: Another popular response to the RealSelf survey was Juvederm, a hyaluronic acid dermal filler that unlike Botox fills in fine lines and wrinkles. The effects of Juvederm last from 9 months to a year and healing from Juvederm injections can take upwards of two weeks. For that reason, make sure you book your appointment no sooner than 3 to 4 weeks before your wedding to be safe. Juvederm isn’t just for wrinkles, either, it can also be used to create fuller lips, another area viewers of your photo tend to zero in on. In fact, according to buffer.com, along with the eyes, the smile is the number one areas people focus on when looking at your face.
Liposuction: For brides looking to look even better in their gown, 8.4 percent of those in the Realself survey are interested in treating at least one area of the body with liposuction. Liposuction procedures like Coolsculpting are a great way to target and remove body fat deposits quickly and effectively. Procedures run upwards of $1500 an area, but in the case of cool sculpting, the fat doesn’t just melt away, it will never come back in the same area, so results are considered permanent. There is some recovery associated with this type of procedure, and the results don’t happen immediately. It can take up to 2 months to notice the full effects of your Coolsculpting treatments, and your body may even continue to lose fat cells for up to 6 months after your procedure, so be sure to book your appointments accordingly. Also be sure to allow time for your dress to be altered following any fat loss due to your treatment, too. You don’t want to find out a week before your wedding that your entire gown needs costly rush alterations!
Chemical and Laser Peels: Chemical and laser peels have long been popular options for brides. They give your face a youthful glow and can reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage and even acne scarring, revealing a more radiant, smoother complexion. Recovery time for laser and chemical peels can take about two weeks, and the results last anywhere from 6 to 12 weeks or longer. The average cost for a chemical or laser peel is $2275, depending on location and type of procedure.
Whatever you decide to do to improve your appearance for your wedding, remember, the best thing you’ll wear on your special day is the one that costs nothing at all: your smile. For the rest of it, allow yourself time to budget and time to heal, and don’t forget to allow time and money for alterations or changes in makeup shades if you decide to undergo procedures that may refresh your skin and lighten your complexion.
