Have you ever considered breast implants, but held off because you hoped to breastfeed your baby someday? Have you already gotten implants, but aren’t sure if breastfeeding is safe- or even possible? A recent study may offer some hope to patients considering nursing with implants. We asked plastic surgeon Dr. Ryan Mitchell for some clarification.
Breast implant surgery is the number one plastic surgery procedure in the US year after year. But while this procedure is popular with patients from all walks of life, one size fits all definitely does not apply. Today, there are more implant options than ever before- but more options aren’t always better. We spoke to plastic surgeon Dr. Ryan Mitchell of Henderson, NV about the differences in breast implants- and how those differences really affect your results.
Many women who are considering breast augmentation surgery do a great deal of research online regarding the types of implants. All FDA-approved breast implants have pros and cons and each has specific benefits that might appeal to a patient with certain needs or anatomy. In a consultation, Dr. Mitchell talks through the best options for each patient based on their individual desires.
Common types of breast implants include Saline, Silicone and Form-Stable implants. Saline implants are FDA-approved for women aged 18 or older. These implants are filled with salt water. The water is sterile, as is the implant when it is placed. A benefit of a saline implant is that, should the implant leak or break, the woman’s body safely absorbs the saline used in the implant.
Silicone implants feel more natural, like a woman’s breast tissue. These implants are filled with a silicone gel. Silicone breast implants are approved by the FDA for use in breast augmentation surgery for woman aged 22 and older. If a silicone breast implant leaks, the implant will not collapse. Women who choose silicone breast implants may need to visit their surgeon on a scheduled basis to assure the implants are performing properly.
A Form-Stable implant is popularly referred to as a Gummy Bear implant. These are silicone implants but the silicone used is of a thicker consistency than standard silicone implants. A form-stable implant also maintains its shape even if the outer implant shell is broken. In order to place the form-stable implant, a longer incision is required due to its shape.
While every type of breast implant has its own benefits, the best way to determine what is best for you is in a consult with Dr. Mitchell. In this consult, you can touch and feel the different options for implants. You will also be able to wear a sizing bra that allows you to place the implant to see what the results can be like. This is the best environment to make the decision on which breast implant is right for you.
