Moisturizer Prevents Wrinkles
When you came of age, did your mother or grandmother present you with a big bottle of lotion to help you start "preventing wrinkles"? Well, as it turns out, that’s not exactly how it works. If you want to prevent wrinkles, not just any old moisturizer will do - it has to have anti-aging properties like SPF, otherwise it's not doing anything but moisturizing your skin. The good news is, when you moisturize your skin, it looks healthier and more vibrant. But those results aren’t long-term, and that moisturizer offers your skin no protection from aging. This is an easy fix, though - just swap your regular lotion for a product with an SPF and boost the benefits of your moisturizer without adding another step to your routine.
Darker Skin Doesn’t Get Cancer
If you’ve got a dark complexion, you may have heard that your skin is less likely to get melanoma because you have more melanin than those with lighter skin. But even though melanin does offer some protection against the sun, anyone can get melanoma if they have excessive sun damage. So no matter your skin tone, be sure to wear an SPF when you head outside. People with darker skin should also beware of the other type of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma. Basal cell carcinoma is actually more common than melanoma, and people with darker skin are at a higher risk for this type of cancer than those with lighter skin.
Greasy Foods Cause Breakouts
This one isn’t entirely true, but it kind of can be. Eating greasy or fatty food shouldn’t have any effect on your skin, but if you get it on your skin and don’t wash it off, it can clog your pores and cause a blemish. Don’t be afraid to indulge in those fries if you want them, but remember to wash your hands and face when you’re done eating so you don’t develop any pesky pimples! All Permanent Sun Damage Occurs Before Age 18
Wouldn’t it be nice if you could go 18 years without a sunburn and be set for life? Unfortunately, that’s not how skin works. While yes, it’s true that you can get permanent sun damage before age 18, unfortunately you can get it after 18, too. In fact, you can get permanent sun damage at any age, and it will contribute to aging and increase your risk of melanoma no matter how old you are or when you got it.
Tanning Beds Are Safer Than the Sun
Sorry, this one is false. Tanning beds aren’t safer than the sun. In fact, they’re not safe at all, because even though they claim to protect your skin from the harmful UVB rays you’d otherwise be exposed to from tanning in the sun, they do expose your skin to UVA radiation, which actually penetrates deeper into your skin than UVB. Bottom line: Skip the tanning bed and always wear SPF if you must be in the sun. If you really can’t live without that golden glow, consider a bronzer or self or spray tan. And if you do opt for a sunless tan option, you still need to protect your skin with an SPF!
Lemon Juice Lightens Skin
